‘Does Not Have Majority…’: Chidambaram Says ‘One Nation, One Election’ Not Possible :- Chidambaram said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not have enough votes in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha to make those changes to the constitution.

On Monday, Congress leader P. Chidambaram criticized the BJP-led NDA government at the Center over the “one nation, one election” issue, saying that it is not possible under the current Constitution and needs at least five changes.

In response to a question about rumors that the BJP-led NDA government would implement “one nation, one election” during its current term, he said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not have enough support in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha to make those changes to the constitution.

In his Independence Day speech last month, the prime minister made a strong case for “one nation, one election.” He said that too many elections were getting in the way of the country’s growth.

It is not possible under the current Constitution for there to be “one nation, one election.” Chidambaram told reporters here. It needs at least five changes to the Constitution.

The former Union minister said, “Mr. Modi does not have the majority to make those changes to the constitution in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha.”

‘One country, one election’ was harder to achieve, he said, because of the Constitution. “That’s not possible.” “One Nation, One Election” is not at all supported by the INDIA group.

When asked about PM Modi’s recent claim that the Congress wants to end reservations, Chidambaram denied the claim. He asked in a rhetorical way, “Why should we get rid of reservations?”

“We are the ones who say that the 50% level of reservations should be taken away.” We want to know how many people are in each group. That’s what we mean when we say that reservations should be based on population. He told the media, “Don’t believe everything the prime minister says.”

At a gathering in Kurukshetra on September 15, Prime Minister Modi slammed the Congress, saying that its “royal family” wanted to end reservation for Dalits. He also said that as long as he was there, he would not let even a small part of the reservation that B R Ambedkar had given be taken away.

During his Monday meeting with the reporters, Chidambaram was asked if the Congress would choose a candidate for chief minister in the October 5 Haryana assembly elections. He said that the Congress usually doesn’t name a CM candidate before the election.

“Usually, after an election, MLAs get together and are asked what they want.” Then the top leaders say who will be the chief minister. He said, “I think the same thing will be done in Haryana.”

The top Congress leader criticized the state’s BJP government on a number of problems, such as unemployment, farming, and the state’s debt.

He asked people to vote for the Congress in the Assembly polls and said that his party would boost development, agriculture, and industry, bring back Haryana’s growth rate, and deal with unemployment and inflation.

“The BJP says it has a two-engine government.” One engine doesn’t have any fuel, and the other one is just plain broken. Why does the government need two engines? He said, “It’s time to get rid of the two engines.”
