Because of the US presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) had to be moved back a day. On Wednesday night, all eyes were on New York’s UBS Arena.
Going all the way back to 1984, when Madonna performed “Like a Virgin” at the first VMAs in a wedding dress, the yearly award show has a reputation for weird fashion. On this year’s red carpet, a number of people seemed to honor the Queen of Pop.
Anitta and Addison Rae both chose bold wedding looks. Anitta wore a Dolce & Gabbana dress with a veil and stiletto heels to finish off her look. Sabrina Carpenter, who was nominated for Artist of the Year, wore a strapless vintage Bob Mackie dress that Madonna wore to the 1991 Oscars.
A lot of people dressed in old clothes that night, like GloRilla’s hairstyle that was inspired by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Halsey’s vintage Versace dress that Elizabeth Hurley wore last in 1996.

In a darker version by Dior, Taylor Swift seemed to be channeling the famous yellow plaid outfit that Cher Horowitz wore in the 1990s hit movie “Clueless.” On the other hand, people on social media made jokes that Lil Nas X’s flashy helmeted outfit was also a nod to the Pink Ranger, another hit from the 1990s.
The red carpet this year was black, and many of the stars who came dressed in dark colors and gothic styles. Some people chose beautiful (and, in the cases of Suki Waterhouse and Margaret Qualley, feathery) black gowns.
They wore Dolce & Gabbana and Chanel, respectively. Benson Boone, a singer, wore a black top with lacy, see-through parts and flashy shoes.
Another interesting take on the little black dress was worn by award show host Megan Thee Stallion. It had a corseted bodice and a skirt that spread out above and below the knee instead of the waist.
As Chappell Roan, who was up for Best New Artist, she wore a floor-length Y/Project dress with a cross pendant and long nails sticking out of fingerless chainmail gloves.
