4 Ways to Raccoon-Proof Your Bird Feeder

Smart animals like raccoons often figure out ways to get into bird feeders. But there are some smart things you can do to keep them away and make sure.

A baffle is a cylinder- or cone-shaped object that keeps squirrels from getting to the feeder.

1. Install a Baffle

Make sure it's big enough and high enough off the ground so that raccoons can't climb or jump over it when you put it on the pole below the feeder.

Hang your feeder from a wire that goes between two things, like bushes or poles. Make sure the feeder is 10 to 12 feet away from both of them.

2. Hang the Feeder

Putting plastic drink bottles or other slippery things on the wire can make it even harder for them to get across.

Some bird feeders have a weight-sensitive feature that stops birds from eating when bigger animals come near.

3. Use a Weight-Sensitive

Lighter birds can keep eating at these feeders while foxes are left to go hungry because they stay open.

Nocturnal means that raccoons are most busy at night. So they are less likely to steal from your bird box.

4. Bring the Feeder

It might take a little extra work, but this is the only way to be sure that rats won't eat at night.
