'Ayushman Bharat Insurance Scheme Now Covers Those Above 70': Modi 3.0 Delivers On Big Campaign Promise

The government has approved comprehensive health coverage for seniors to improve geriatric care in India.   

On Wednesday, it stated that the flagship Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana will cover individuals over 70 regardless of income.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared in April that 70-year-olds would receive health insurance.

This scheme will cover 4.5 crore families with Rs 5 lakh in free health insurance, benefiting 6 crore seniors.

Senior individuals over 70 from AB PM-JAY families would receive an additional ₹5 lakh per year to supplement their coverage, according to a government news release.  

Health insurance coverage for seniors over 70 is up to ₹5 lakh per year for families. People covered by various public health insurance plans 

Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), and Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) may choose AB PM-JAY or continue their previous scheme.

The changes will also apply to seniors with private health insurance or Employees' State Insurance.
