Copycat Onion Wrapped Flying Dutchman Recipe

This copycat onion-wrapped flying Dutchman is a cheeseburger in a soft, crisp, and sweet onion "bun" that complements the rich meat.  

– 1 large white onion – 3/4 pound ground beef round – 1 teaspoon kosher salt – 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper – 4 slices American cheese, cut into third – 1/4 cup mayonnaise – 1 tablespoon ketchup – 1 teaspoon mustard – 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish

From the middle of the onion, cut pieces that are 4 1/2 inches thick. Throw away the smaller ends and use the larger ends for something else.

Cut the meat into 4 pieces, and then make a very thin patty out of each piece.  Add salt and pepper to the patties to taste.

Use medium-high heat to warm up a big pot. Adding two onion slices at a time, let them cook for about two minutes without moving them.

Put in two patties and cook for another two to three minutes, until they are golden brown.

The onion and burger pieces should be turned over and cooked until golden brown. As the burger cooks, it should be pressed down.

Top one onion slice and both burger patties with 2 cheese slices. The second burger patty should go on top of the cheese-topped onion slice.

Put remaining onion slice on burger and press. Flip burger and cook 1–2 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.

Continue with remaining onions, patties, and cheese.   Stir together mayo, ketchup, mustard, and pickle relish in a small basin.  Use with burgers.
