‘You Were Zero, Will Remain Zero’: Kolkata Cop Mocks Doctors’ Protests Over RG Kar Incident, Inquiry Initiated

A Kolkata Police official mocked doctors' protests over the RG Kar rape and murder case on social media, sparking a new dispute.

He wrote, “Tora din raat jai jagis na keno, 0 chili, 0 thakbi (Even if you protest day and night, you were a zero and remain one forever).

According to sources, Patuli Thana Officer-In-Charge Tirthankar Dey called agitating physicians “comrades” and made the offensive comment.

Doctors have been protesting for better safety legislation, a safer work environment, and justice for the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Even as the Supreme Court and state government asked doctors to return to work, junior doctors in Kolkata resumed their sit-in outside the West Bengal Health Department's headquarters and their ‘cease work’ on Thursday.

For nearly 40 hours, doctors have protested outside ‘Swathya Bhavan’. On Wednesday, the administration rejected the doctors' demands for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's attendance and a live broadcast to resolve the standoff.

Traffic was controlled near Salt Lake's ‘Swathya Bhavan’ by many police officers.

We shall continue our agitation and ‘cease work’. We did not want to continue. The state government will not meet with us.

"We want to make it clear that our protest is not political," one doctor told PTI.
